Japan postal workers go on strike in demand for equal rights for casual workers

Some 72 members of Postal Industry Workers Union went on strike on March 18 at its 28 work places from Morioka to Nagasaki. More than 150 supporters and comrades gathered in front of Japan Post main headquarters in Tokyo as workers went on strike (photo). Among the three bureaus in Tokyo, four casual workers stood up for their rights at Oji Post Office. The union has demanded a 20,000-yen raise for permanent and salaried contract workers, and a 150-yen raise for hourly-wage contract workers, as well as equal treatment for casual workers. The company, however, responded on March 13 that it will give permanent and salaried workers a 1,000-yen raise and some of hourly contract workers only a 10-yen raise. More than 194,000 casual employees work at Japan Post, which takes up 46.4% of all workers. (By Japan Postal Industry Workers Union Member, M)
